স্থানীয় সময় মধ্যরাত ১২টা ৫৯ মিনিটে মাজার-ই-শরিফ শহরের কাছে ৬.৩ মাত্রার এই ভূমিকম্প আঘাত হানে।
ভূমিকম্পের উৎপত্তিস্থল ছিল হিন্দুকুশ পর্বতমালা এলাকায়, মাটির ২৮ কিলোমিটার গভীরে। রাজধানী কাবুলসহ পার্শ্ববর্তী প্রদেশগুলোতেও কম্পন অনুভূত হয়।
তালেবান সরকারের স্বাস্থ্য মন্ত্রণালয় জানিয়েছে, ধ্বংসস্তূপের নিচে এখনো বহু মানুষ আটকা থাকতে পারে। উদ্ধারকর্মীরা রাতভর তল্লাশি অভিযান চালাচ্ছেন।
প্রাথমিকভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকা থেকে অনেক ঘরবাড়ি ধসে পড়ার খবর পাওয়া গেছে।
স্থানীয় হাসপাতালগুলোতে আহতদের চিকিৎসা চলছে। তবে চিকিৎসা সামগ্রী ও রক্তের সংকট দেখা দিয়েছে বলে কর্মকর্তারা জানিয়েছেন।
তালেবান সরকার আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থাগুলোর সহায়তা চেয়েছে।

“উদ্ধার অভিযান চলছে, তবে পাহাড়ি এলাকায় যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন থাকায় ত্রাণ কার্যক্রমে বাধা সৃষ্টি হচ্ছে। প্রাণহানির সংখ্যা আরও বাড়তে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা করা হচ্ছে।”

At least 20 people have been killed and more than 300 injured in a powerful earthquake in northern Afghanistan.
The 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif at 12:59 a.m. local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Hindu Kush mountain range, 28 kilometers deep. Tremors were also felt in the capital Kabul and neighboring provinces.
The Taliban government’s health ministry said many people could still be trapped under the rubble. Rescue workers were searching through the night.
Initial reports of collapsed houses in the affected area were that the injured were being treated in local hospitals. However, officials said there was a shortage of medical supplies and blood.
The Taliban government has sought help from international organizations.
According to experts, the Hindu Kush region in northern Afghanistan is an earthquake-prone area. Several powerful earthquakes have killed more than hundreds of people there in recent years.
“Rescue operations are underway, but relief efforts are being hampered by communication disruptions in the mountainous areas. It is feared that the death toll may rise further.”
