The Taliban government has confirmed the death toll from a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake in northern Afghanistan, with more than 150 people killed. The quake struck near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in the Hindu Kush region at 12:59 am local time. Its epicenter was 28 kilometers deep. Its tremors were also felt in the capital Kabul.
After the incident, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Disaster Management said that the damage could increase further. The earthquake caused many houses to collapse and many people are feared trapped under the rubble. Local authorities have started rescue operations, but communication systems in remote mountainous areas are being disrupted, hampering relief efforts.
The earthquake was centered in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which is known to be an earthquake-prone area. Afghanistan has been hit by repeated major earthquakes in recent years—previously, a series of earthquakes in the same region in 2023 killed more than a hundred people.
A spokesman for the Taliban government said the administration was working to ensure prompt treatment of the injured and assistance to the affected families. It also called on international organizations to provide assistance.
